Planning a vacation to Peru will more than likely lead you into its Capital and largest city, Lima. The different flavors of this city are numerous. If you love the beauty and relaxation of ocean breezes, or if you desire to tour the many museums to learn about native culture and art, the historic city of Lima would be the perfect place to start. Accommodations are plentiful, ranging from very reasonable to extravagantly luxurious. Book a tour to popular cities like Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca during the day, then return to your Lima hotel for an evening of excitement by visiting a fine restaurant for an exquisite dinner, followed by a tasty nightcap at one of the many bars or clubs that light up the nightlife. One of the things you may want to consider is what time of the year you would get the best impression of this lovely city. During the months between April and November you may find that the quality of the air is not as good as during other times of the year. A mist, of sorts, referred to as the garua, covers the city, which casts a more foggy effect over the area. From December through April are the sunshine months with temperatures varying between 80 and 90 degrees. It’s the perfect beach weather to enjoy surfing, or hang gliding off the cliffs. You may also want to consider timing your travel around any one of the many Carnivals and Festivals that go on throughout the year. You are in for a lively and FUN vacation if you book during those times. You know the old saying, “When in Rome…”. Well, when in Lima…!! Have a blast!

Lima is located in the central part of the Western Pacific Coast Region. It is known for its fertile valleys of the Rimac, Chillon and Lurin rivers. These fertile valleys are what drew the natives to establish their homesteads over 7000 years ago. A trip to the Pachacmac Temple and ruins is a must see if you want to see how the natives lived and worshipped. By the 15th century all of that would change with the invasion of Spanish rule by Francisco Pizarro in 1535. In 1542 it was declared the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. In 1569 Francisco de Toledo brought in his power and repressive system of government into Lima, which ruled over the natives for the next 200 years. On July 28, 1821, General Jose de San Martin successfully declared Peru to be independent from Lima.

Peru’s capital has greatly grown in its resources and wealth, but throughout this well established city you will still find much poverty, not unlike most South American countries and their cities. That does not take away from all of its attractions, history and natural beauty that you will find in its museums, shops and breathtaking landscapes. The craft markets are so much fun, where you can buy handmade products from the natives. You can always barter and haggle for a great buy. Another popular site is the historic Cathedral where the body of Pizarro rests. The bronze fountain in the Plaza de Armas dates back to 1650, which is one more point of interest to check out if you are touring the city. It is well advised to hire a tour guide to get the full effect of the rich history that dwells within the borders of this fabulous city.

If you go outside of the city to Miraflores and San Isidro you will find the more established homes and upscale hotels, shops, galleries, theatres and restaurants. There is something for everyone. Miraflores, which means “look at the flowers”, explains its name by the many flower gardens and parks, creating a relaxed atmosphere in the midst of a busy city. One of the more famous places to relax and enjoy the scenic ocean views is the Parque del Amor, “Park of Love”, where a statue of two lovers, in a romantic embrace, symbolize the artists desire that statues should represent love, rather than battle heroes.

Getting to Miraflores is fairly easy. It involves flying into Lima, and then from the airport you can take a taxi or a bus to one of its tasteful hotels and spend your visit in this preferred city.
