El Museo Santuarios Andinos or Andean Sanctuaries Museum of the Catholic University of Santa Maria features an exclusive attraction: The Lady of the Ampato; the best preserved pre-Hispanic mummy in the world. Most famously known as Juanita, the mummy was found on September 1995 on the summit of the Ampato Volcano about 6288 meters above sea level by archeologists Johan Reinhard, Jose Antonio Chávez, and a mountain climber named Miguel Zárate.
Juanita was buried with valued ceramics and gold and silver which are believed to have been placed with her as offerings. Researchers have concluded that Juanita, a girl of 12 to 14 years old, was sacrificed to honor the mountain peak Ampato, considered a sacred mountain by ancient Peruvians.
Studies show that the young girl was sacrificed approximately in 1466, when the Inca Tupac Yupanqui was in power. It is also believed that she was a Palla, or a woman dedicated to the service of the Sun by the Incas.
The museum is located on 110 La Merced Street in the Colonial Centre of Arequipa. It is open to the public from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00pm and Sundays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
