Arequipa – Volcanoes

* Click Image to Enlarge

Deep in the heart of the Andes Mountains is quite a bit of volcanic activity, which is primarily located in the southern portion of the country of Peru. The Central Zone of the Andes is a rather elevated region, with 16 volcanoes spread throughout its peaks. The most famous volcanoes are Misti, Chachani and Ubinas. Ubinas is the most active volcano in Peru, with its last eruption in 2006. Its eruption caused nearby towns to evacuate, killed livestock, and its impact resulted in significant respiratory and eye problems for the surrounding residents.

90 miles northwest of Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru, is the highest volcano in the country. Nevado Coropuna tops out at around 20,900 feet. Nevado Chachani comes in at a close second at 19,800 feet, which is also found near Arequiopa. You can find tours here that offer guided trips to the top of Chachani. It is an easy climb since there are no glaciers or ice caps to worry about. You biggest worry may be altitude sickness. Some coca or muna tea can quickly remedy this annoying ailment, if you can find some in one of the local markets.

The most intriguing Volcano, near the town of Arequipa, is Misti. It is an easy hike that can be done independently because of its smooth ascent. There is no need to use ropes and climbing equipment. In 1998, archaeologists found six Inca mummies and a rare collection of artifacts inside Misti’s crater, which are now in Arequipa’s Museo de Santuarios Andinos. But the most intriguing fact surrounding Misti is the white volcanic stone, known as sillar, which was used in the construction of a good portion of Arequipa’s colonial buildings. For this reason, Arequipa is known as the “White City”. Misti can be viewed, in its splendor, from Arequipa. Sit at an outdoor café, or gaze out the window of your hotel room, and drink in the beauty of its majesty.

Sabancaya is another volcano that you may think about climbing with a tour guide. It also is located near Arequipa. The best time to climb the volcanoes in Peru is between the months of April and November. There are plenty of tour agencies who can provide you with a guide. Tours usually last from one to three days. Camping is the only accommodation on the overnight treks. Make sure that you bring warm clothing for the cool nights in the higher elevations.
