Nearly 19% of all bird species in the world and 45% of all neo-tropical birds are found in Peru, with 125 true endemic birds. It is a bird watchers paradise, and a safe sanctuary for these beautiful specimens to spread their wings.

MANU
Manu Biosphere Reserve, located in Boca Manu, Peru, has the highest concentration of bird life in the world, with over 900 species that have been recorded. With the earth containing nearly 9000 different species of birds, Manu holds one ninth of the world’s species. If you are thinking of planning a trip to this exotic habitat for the best birding adventures you will want to travel to Amazonia or Pantiacola Lodge, in the port of lowland Manu. Manu Wildlife Centre is the best lodge for birding, conveniently located outside of the national park. It claims to be the best lodge in the continent, with its excellent canopy tower. It is quite pricey, and to get there you need to make arrangements for a boat or a plane ride from Cusco. But it is well worth the trip for all of you bird lovers.

TAMBOPATA AND MADRE DE DIOS
A more easily accessible lodge from Puerto Maldonado is the Explorer’s Inn. It is similar to the Manu Wildlife Centre in that it has much of the same birds. It lists the world record for the most birds, of some 600 species. It has one of the largest varieties of flora and fauna in the world, with over 2000 mammals and plant species.

ABRA MALAGA (Cusco)
Southeast Peru, in the department of Cusco, you can find a few forest patches that offer refuge to some of the critically threatened and endangered birds, such as the White-browed Tit-Spinetail Leptasthenura, Royal Cinclodes Cinclodes aricomae and Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant Anairetes alpines. Abra Malaga is among one of them. You can find this close to the pass on the Cusco-Quillabamba road.

IQUITOS
Aceer, close to Iquitos, is known for the half mile canopy walkway. Other areas that are worth visiting, for lowland birding, include Pucallpa, Tarapoto, Villa Rica-Puerto Bermudas road and Satipo. The prices are reasonable and the birds are plentiful.
