Andes Mountains

Of all the destinations that one can consider while visiting Peru, most every site that draws tourist attraction is to be found in the majestic mountains of the Andes. The Andes Mountains are not just known for its splendor and beauty, but also for the rich history that is held within the peaks and valleys of this vast region. The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world and second highest, next to the Himalayas. Its highest point, Cerro Aconcagua, is found in Argentina, but in the Peruvian Andes the highest peak, Huascaran Sur, tops off at 22,200 feet. The Andes cover the length of 7 countries, beginning in Venezuela and extending through parts of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.

Points of interest that attract most tourism are in the ancient cities where the Inca Empire established its civilization. The most famous city is Machu Picchu, once the city of some of the more elite Inca’s, and now one of the Seven Wonders of the World. For the adventurous there is the Inca Trail that can be hiked to get to this well preserved city of ancient ruins. For the more leisure traveler a train is made available out of Cusco to take you on a journey to the lost city. Within the trail is the Sacred Valley which holds much of the Inca history with all of its ruins still intact. Still you might like to consider a great trekking experience by visiting Huascaran National Park. Mountain climbing, some limited snow skiing and horseback riding are some of the activities that the park has to offer. The park is located in the White Range, Cordillera Blanca. It is there that you can visit the Alpamayo Mountain, which was named the most beautiful mountain in the world, by the UNESCO. For obvious reasons the Cordillera Blanca is a prime destination for mountain tours.

The Andes Highlands is home to the city of Arequipa, some 7,740 feet above sea level, known for its incredible Volcanoes. The Misti volcano can be climbed very easily, not needing any type of equipment. Colca Canyon would be a trip worth taking to observe the deepest canyon in the world. You can take a trip down the rapids in the canyon’s rivers, or even take an extended trek down to the Amazon Rainforest. Cusco is an ideal city to visit and book one of these exciting package tours from the mountain tops to the lush jungles. From Arequipa and Cusco, you can arrange to travel southeast to the town of Puno, located along the shores of Lake Titicaca, 12,000 feet up into the Andes.

The list of hot spots in this multi-diverse country goes on and on, as does the Andes. There is so much to see and experience, so find a skilled Peru Tour agent to help you in making your visit one that you will open your eyes and heart to a land of unforgettable memories.
