The Andes Mountains aren’t just beautiful to look at from a room with a view. Can’t you hear them echoing “Come and climb me”? The famed mountains can be climbed by all. There are beginner trails for the less experienced climber, to the challenging trails for the advanced. The Nevado Huascaran and Nevado Alpamayo found in the Cordillera Blanca are two such mountains that await your ascent. These mountains are in the best chain for climbing in Peru. They are also noted as the most beautiful mountains in the world. The city of Huaraz is the base city used most for climbers in this area. With restaurants, hostels and hotels at your convenience you can plan your trip through a travel agent to help direct you to guides for your excursion. They may also recommend the peaks of Ishinca and Pisco for the inexperienced climber. The intermediate climber may want to tackle the Alpamayo, while the more advanced would be recommended to Huascaran. Year round climbing can be done on the lower peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, but if you plan to ascend the higher mountains the best time to do so is between May and September.
Traveling down to the southern portion of Peru is the city of Arequipa where the breathtaking volcano, Misti, awaits your gaze. You can enjoy the volcano as you sip a cool drink from a restaurant patio, or you can slip on a pair of trekking shoes and hike Misti to its 19,000 foot elevation. She can be climbed all year round. A little further away is Chachani, reaching nearly 20,000 feet, or head to Colca Canyon where you will find Hualca Hualca and Ampato.
Cusco is yet another well known city for its mountains. The Vilcabamba and Vilcanota mountain chain are a little bit more of a challenge and not for the inexperienced. Peak season for these climbs is June through September. There are only a few tour agencies, so make sure you do some research and planning well in advance. These expeditions are usually longer than the normal climb so keep that in mind. The most popular peaks, Salkantay and Ausangate, are both about 20,000 feet.
So you see, there is a mountain to climb for everyone’s experience. Start exercising, and get those climbing shoes broken in.
