Many tourists who visit Peru come for the trekking, which is one of the more popular activities that are offered. In all of the Americas the Inca Trail is, by far, the best trekking path to explore. From the famed Inca Capital of Cusco to the Machu Picchu ruins, the Inca trail holds the rich fullness of the native empires history, as you pass through the Sacred Valley. The Inca citizens used trails like this as the primary means of travel. However, this trail was not exactly your average road. It most likely served as a sacred route, dedicated for religious pilgrimages. All along the way you will see the ancient ruins that were intended for worshiping the Andes Mountains, the cosmos and all of nature. Probably the most famous place is the lost city of Machu Picchu, which is located at the end of the Inca Trail. It has recently been named one of the Seven Wonders of the World because of how well preserved the ruins were, when it was discovered in the early 1900’s. Thousands of artifacts were found, and can be observed at the museums in Cusco, including the Museum of regional History. Visiting the museums that hold these artifacts, before taking your trek through the trail, is a great way to understand the overall impact and culture of the great Inca Empire. It will enable you to see history come alive as you walk through time, down the Sacred Inca Trails.

All trekking excursions must be booked through a licensed trekking company, so that the integrity of the trail may be preserved from overuse and damage. There are a number of agencies to choose from in Cusco, where you can arrange your trip accordingly. There are various trips to choose from that will cater to your personal preference. You can take a quick trip that lasts just one day, or a two day, four day, and even a seven day excursion. Your tour guide can give you the best suggestions for what package would suit you. The best time of year to travel the Inca Trail is from June to August. The weather is most accommodating during this time of year. December to March is the rainy season, so it can get a little messy on the muddy path. Camping is the only means of accommodations, so if you are more of a hotel person you might want to think twice about taking this rugged tour. Since the trail is so popular, it is recommended that you book your tour well in advance. Only 500 people a day are allowed to travel the trail, so please keep that in mind when you are planning your trip. February is the only month that the trail is not open, due to clean up purposes.
