High up in the majestic mountains of the Andes, some 11,000 feet above sea level, is the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Cusco is probably the most visited city in Peru because of the rich history that it holds from the early civilization of its first inhabitants. From the ancient stone walls that were built by the natives, to the Spanish architecture seen in the baroque main cathedral at the Plaza de Armas, history comes alive behind every door of this living museum.
Cusco is unique in that while modern day influences have added to the flavor of this old city, there are still reminders of the unforgettable character that it still holds. Outdoor markets keep alive the skills of the Amerindians as they display their crafts of woven and handmade goods. Restaurants offer many of the traditional dishes that have been passed down through the centuries. Have you ever tried guinea pig? You will have a chance to sample this delicacy at one of the many eateries throughout the city. If that doesn’t appeal to you, there are many international foods that you can find in some of the best restaurants in all of Peru.
