The Islands of Ballestas are located off of the southern coast of Ica, Peru. These beautiful islands, with its many caves and arches, provide a haven for its sea life creatures, which include sea lions, Humboldt penguins, cormorants, boobies and pelicans. Dolphins and whales have also been seen swimming in the waters surrounding this marine life habitat.

Paracas National Reserve is found about 15 km south of Pisco, Peru. Its establishment in 1975 was for the protection of its marine and bird life. During the mid 19th century this peninsula played a prime role in the Peruvian economy. Because of the great amount of bird life, the droppings, “guano”, produced by the birds, were gathered and used as fertilizer. The natives used this for centuries to increase crop yields. It was not until the 1800’s that the Europeans rediscovered its tremendous agricultural value. This became a flourishing business for many decades, which became a big European export. Due to the hot, dry climate and the Humboldt or Peruvian Current, there is no rain in this area. This helped in baking the guano and preserving all of the important nutrients that are needed to make good fertilizer. Remnants of the guano industry can still be seen today when you take a guided boat tour to the Paracas peninsula and Ballestas Islands.

The inhabitants of Paracas date back to 1300 BC, long before the Inca. Their culture was known for its pottery and textiles. If you take a boat tour of the islands you will see a giant figure etched into a hill, called “Candelabra”. No one knows the history behind this interesting work of art, or who may have done it. Hop on a speedboat and see it for yourself. Two hour tours are organized out of Pisco and Paracas.
