With a country so rich in history and culture you will not want to bypass the many museums that are visited by people all over the world. Typically the larger cities are where you will find the better museums, but many little, off beat towns may have some of their own local museums with the unique character of their memorabilia awaiting you. Let’s go to the larger cities first.

Lima, the capital and largest city in Peru, has many different types of museums. The Museo Arqueologico Rafael Larco Herrera is where you will find the largest private pre-Columbian art collection in the world. It features the Moche civilization and its famed ceramics. The Sala Erotica is one of the most visited exhibits in all of Peru. Sala Erotica means Erotic room. Need I say more? The Museo de la Nacion is one of the best museums in Peru to learn about the country’s ancient empires, especially if you find interest in Inca artifacts, art and history. One other point of interest is the Museo de San Francisco. The architecture alone is worth viewing, with its 17th century baroque structure. In it contains religious art from the colonial era, while below lay the catacombs, with its ancient history hidden beneath this unique museum.

Next stop, Cusco, set high in the Andes Mountains with its ancient Inca ruins. Cusco is one of the most popular cities to visit and it is nothing short of a living museum as you tour this historic city. Cusco was the Capital of the Inca Empire. The Museo de Arte Precolombino displays the art from all notable periods of Peru history. The Convento y Museo de Sant Catalina holds many paintings that were done at the Cusco school. This museum is on the Acllawasi, which is a sacred Inca spot.

The city of Arequipa holds one of the most interesting of all Inca artifacts. At the Museo Santuarios Andinos, the mummified Ice Maiden of Ampato is the one and only exhibit. Juanita, the Inca maiden was sacrificed by priests in the 1500’s. She was found in 1995, in the high elevation of the Andes and because of its icy climate she was found in almost perfect condition. The Monasterio de Santa Catalina is a religious museum that primarily focuses on the Spanish architecture and cobblestone streets. Arequipa is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the country.

Traveling north, in the city of Lambayeque and near the city of Chiclayo, the Sipan museum displays one of the best exhibits in the country. The tomb of the Lord of Sipan was found at the nearby ruins of Sipan which also can be visited while you are there. The museum itself displays the kind of indulgent lifestyle that Peruvian cultures became accustomed to. The Conjunto Momumental de Belen is a complex that makes its statement as a museum, of sorts, that shows off its architectural accomplishments, which include a colonial church and two hospitals. Some of the ceramics and tiles date back as far as 1500 BC.
