Cell Phone – Phone Companies – Internet Service


The country code of Peru is ‘51’. All city codes begin with ‘0’. If you need to call outside Peru you must dial ‘00’ and then the country code followed by the phone number.


LAND LINES

Telmex and Telefonica are two phone companies that can supply land line phone connections. Prices vary between 40 and 120 soles a month. Americatel and Millicom are a couple other options to consider. Be prepared to wait a week or two for your phone to be installed. A six month contract is usually the requirement, with penalty fees if the contract is canceled early.


CELL PHONES

Telefonica/Movistar, Claro and Nextel are the three cell phone service provider that are offered in Peru. Nextel tends to be more expensive and is mostly used for businesses. There are two options to choose from once you decide on a service provider. Post-pago is a contracted service, and Pre –pago are phone cards.


INTERNET SERVICE

To connect the internet to your home you will need to contact Speedy, which is a part of Telefonica. Typically internet fees are between 100 to 200 soles a month. Internet cafes or cabinas are very popular and conveniently located throughout the cities. You can expect to pay anywhere between .50 to 2 soles per half hour. Starbucks and MacDonald’s have WiFi
