From the canyons of Cusco to the jungles of the Amazon, white water rafting has made a big splash in the tourism industry of Peru. Depending on your experience you can find just about any level of white water rafting to suit your adventurous spirit. You can take a day trip down the Urubamba River in Cusco or a 4 day trip on the Apurimac River. Arequipa offers the ultimate in water rafting for the more experienced rafter. Plan a 6 day trip into the deepest canyon in the world. The Tambopata River takes you into the vast jungles of the Amazon Rainforest. This is a 12 day adventure into the heartland of Peru, starting at Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca and ends in the Inca Capital of Cusco. Listed, in more detail, are some of the more appealing rafting trips that you can experience in Peru.
URUBAMBA RIVER IN CUSCO
Day trips down the Urubamba River are quite the rage. Once you arrive in Cusco you can arrange a package trip that typically includes everything from transportation, lunch and equipment. Packages start at around $25.00.
1.Huambutio to Pisac (year round)
For the beginner rafter these rapids are short and easy to navigate. It is about a 6 hour trip, beginning to end, which will take you through beautiful scenery and a visit to the Pisac market and Inca ruins.
2.Ollantaytambo to Chilca
This is a popular section of whitewater rafting, with the rapids a bit more challenging. This trip usually combines some trekking and rafting with a 5 day package through the Inca trail. There is more trekking than rafting, but the combination makes for a great trip.
3.Huaran (June through September)
Further down the Urubamba river towards Machu Picchu are the more sizable and rapid whitewaters. Advanced rafting experience is recommended for this more intense trip. These trips are not always offered so check well in advance to see if they are available.
APURIMAC RIVER IN CUSCO (4 days)
The Apurimac River flows through the deep valleys and gorges, amidst the steep cliffs of the Andes Mountains and into the tropical Amazon Rainforest. This is a trip for the experienced rafter and should be lead by professional tour agency. Peru Tour operators make this trip available out of Cusco. The adventure begins in Cusco and ends four days later at Cunyac Bridge and the Hot Springs of Cconoc before driving back to Cusco. Bilingual guides will professionally take you through this exciting and well planned trip down some of the best rapids in the country. A typical package includes transportation and equipment.
TAMBOPATA RIVER
The Tambopata River runs through the Tambopata-Candamo National Park located southeast of Cusco. This specialized trip is not for the faint of heart. Only a few tour agencies operate this 10-12 day trip down through the jungles of the Amazon, where you will find nature at its finest. You can experience wildlife such as monkeys, alligators, tapirs, otters, ocelots and colorful birds of hundreds of different species. The trip begins at Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca and ends in the Inca Capital of Cusco. The best time of the year to take this trip is from May to November. Since this trip is so popular it is recommended that you book early as reservations fill up quickly. A brief overview of this trip is as follows:
Day 1 and 2 involve traveling to the point of the river where you will begin your rafting.
Days 3-9: Are the 5-6 hour rafting tours, while enjoying the pristine rainforest and its scenic surroundings. Once you settle for the night on the warm, sandy beaches you might explore the jungle or try to catch your dinner in the river.
Day 10: A full day on the river and a camp set up near the Tambopata Macaw Lick.
Day 11: You may be able to observe the colorful display of bird life at the clay lick, which might include the famous and sassy Macaws. You will meet up with a motorized canoe that will take you down the river to Puerto Maldonado. No need to pitch your tent tonight. A hotel awaits your tired, yet satisfied body, where you will spend your last night in the comfort of a much welcomed bed.
Day 12: Takes you to the airport for a 30 minute flight back to Cusco.
A typical trip includes equipment, transportation and bilingual guides. Batteries not included, but a trip filled with energizing splendor awaits you.
RIO COTAHUASI IN AREQUIPA
