If you are drawn to a vacation that includes the beautiful beaches of Peru, the northern coastline is the ideal place to bring your surf board and stake your beach umbrella. One of the most popular draws to the northern Pacific Ocean of Peru is the surfing. You will find that the best surfing spots are in the northwestern departments of Tumbes and Piura. Here, you can choose a surf tour that will accommodate your personal needs by directing you to the beaches where the waves fit your experience. Different beaches offer both gentle waves and more robust waves. Because this area is closer to the equator you can enjoy the beaches year round. There are, however, different seasons that make a difference in how you want to plan your trip. From November to March the north swells are smaller but the weather is warmer and sunnier. From March to November the south swells are much larger, but the weather is cooler and windier.
Some of the more notable surfing spots are found in Mancora, Cabo blanco and Organos. The best weather can be enjoyed from November to March. These areas are known to have lovely beach resorts and great nightlife. Traveling further south to Bayovar, Lobitos, Pacasmayo and Chicama, you will find that the surf is more powerful during the months of March through November. Some of the more southern beaches are not as populated, but still can produce some great surfing conditions.
Surfing tours are a great way to experience the fullest impact of your vacation. Most tours will supply everything from food and lodging to transportation. If you choose to take to the road on your own the Pan-American Highway is the main drag for serious surf hunting. This highway travels the extent of the west coast, taking you to all of the most gorgeous spots that any avid surfer could possibly imagine. Stop at Chicama and check out the longest waves in the world. Located about an hour and a half northwest of Trujillo, you can easily get there by car or bus. Puntas Rocas is known for holding world championship surfing competitions, and is located close to Lima. Its beaches are quite popular for the Lima locals during the months from December to March. Grab a towel, a board and ‘hang ten’ with the rest of the surfing gurus, as you catch the best waves of your life!
