If your Peru adventure travel agent tells you to go take a hike, you should probably put that on your list of things to do. Once called hiking, the more accepted word of choice would be trekking. It’s just a fancy way of saying “let’s go trail blazing”, and the Andes Mountains and Highlands are just the place to do that. There are many trails to trek in the different regions of Peru and they are all ready for you to spend an amazing time on, and time is what you will need. Trekking tours can run anywhere from 2 to 7 days. Probably the most famed of trails is the Inca Trail. This ancient trail was traveled by the Incas during pilgrimages through the Sacred Valley. View the ancient ruins as you trek through the beautiful paths of this historical empire. Cusco, the ancient Inca Capital, is typically the starting point for most of these tours. Be prepared to camp along the journey if you plan to take it to its final destination in Machu Picchu. You definitely don’t want to miss that. For the “softer” traveler, you may want to take the shorter day trip on the trail and head back to more comfy accommodations at the end of your trek.
For a little different flavor in trekking you may want to explore the Colca Canyon. These breath taking canyons are located about 100 miles from Arequipa, and are famous for its depth, nearly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in Arizona. You can find some hotels and hostels located on the north and south ridges of the canyon, where there are some little Andean towns to welcome you. Tours to the canyons are plentiful at anyone of the regional tour agencies. Trekking up to higher elevations is usually done in the Cordillera Blanca, just north of Lima, in the city of Huaraz. The air is much thinner in these elevations, so keep that in mind when you are preparing one of these mountainous treks.
The Amazon Jungle region is a different type of trekking altogether due to climate and scenery. You can pick up a Peru trekking tour in Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado and Manu. The Amazon Rainforest welcomes the traveler who appreciates the dense foliage, the abundance of intriguing jungle life and anyone who wishes to experience the most amazing trek of a lifetime. The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most popular trekking locations in Peru.
Wherever your feet take you, whether to the mountains, the valleys or the jungle, seeing Peru on foot is the most up close and personal way to get to know this unforgettable part of the world. Happy trails!
