When to Visit

You are considering a trip to the magnificent country of Peru. The first thing to consider is what time of year to plan this trip of a lifetime. You want to choose the season that best fits the three different regions of Peru. The three regions of Peru are the Western Pacific Coastline, the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Jungle region. There are peak seasons for each of these regions and the climate and weather have much to do with when and where you choose to visit. There are two major seasons in terms of climate. You have the dry season and the wet season. The dry season includes the months of May through October. The rainy season runs from November through April. It should be noted that the seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere. When it is summer in the southern hemisphere it is winter in the northern hemisphere. For example when it is summer in Peru it is winter in the US

For those wanting to visit the region of the majestic Andes Mountains, the best time to do your mountain climbing and trekking would be from June to August when the Andes are at its driest. If you are considering, for instance, a visit to Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, it would be recommended to do so during this dry season. The rainy season in the mountains is in January and February, so you may want to avoid those months. Trekking through the Inca Trails can be enjoyed all year round, but during those months you may want to bring a good pair of mud boots.

Visiting the beautiful beaches of the Western Pacific coastline of Peru, at its peak season (November to March), is one of the most enjoyable spots in all of Peru. One of the more pleasant spots in the northern region is of Tumbes and Piura. The best time to take in the warm sun and alluring ocean is during the months of November to March. The beaches near Lima are filled with delightful ocean breezes during the day, and the nightlife is dynamic and exciting. Because the coastal region is mostly desert the temperatures can hover in the 90’s during these months. If you consider traveling in the off season the temperatures will be somewhat cooler and the activity much quieter. If you plan to visit the Highlands (northern Peru) the temperature does not vary all that much. Year round average temps range around 70 degrees. The wet season is fairly moderate so you can enjoy the Highlands all year round.

Last, but not least, the Amazon Rainforest holds its own captivating essence of pure nature. No matter what time of year you are planning to visit this tropical paradise the weather does not waiver much. It rains all year long. Thus, it is named the “Rainforest” for a very good reason. With that comes heat and humidity. Temperatures typically range between 85-100 degrees on any given day. December through May is when most of the rainfall occurs, however, when it rains it usually lasts only a couple of hours. June to September is usually the most popular months to navigate the Amazon, as the wetter months are just behind. It is a once in a lifetime trip to navigate down the world’s longest river.

Whatever time of year you choose to visit this magical country you will not be disappointed. There is something for everyone no matter what the season. From shopping to surfing, trekking to touring, it all awaits you for the adventure of your life.
